What Is Anal Stenosis?
Anal stenosis is a narrowing of the anal opening that makes bowel movements difficult or painful. It most often develops as scar tissue forms after surgery in the anal area, but it can also result from chronic inflammation, trauma, or radiation treatment.

Symptoms
Common symptoms include:

• Difficulty passing stool
• Pain during bowel movements
• Narrow or thin stools
• Straining or a feeling of incomplete emptying
• Bleeding or discomfort around the anus

Diagnosis
Anal stenosis is usually diagnosed during a physical exam. In some cases, additional testing may be needed to determine the severity of the narrowing and guide treatment.

Treatment
Treatment depends on how severe the narrowing is. Mild cases may improve with stool softeners, increased fiber and water intake, and gentle dilation. More advanced cases may require surgical treatment to widen the anal opening and restore normal function. Early evaluation and treatment can help relieve symptoms and prevent complications.
