Sigmoidoscopy
A sigmoidoscopy is a diagnostic tool that our trained providers use to evaluate the sigmoid colon. The sigmoid colon is the lower part of your colon (large intestine), and connects to your rectum and anus. We use a sigmoidoscopy to diagnose and develop a treatment plan for a myriad of different symptoms, such as:
Diarrhea
Stomach/colon pain
Poylps (abnormal growths)
Intestinal Bleeding
Inflammation
Diverticula
Strictures
We also are able to take a sample of tissue during your sigmoidoscopy, as well as remove hemorrhoids and polyps. It is also used as a cancer screening tool.
Process:
During a sigmoidoscopy, a thin flexible tube with a camera and light affixed to it is inserted into your rectum. The tube travels through your lower portion of your colon, where it will then blow air to improve visibility. Mild discomfort is usually reported, as well as an urge to have a bowel movement. All of this is normal, and we ensure that our patients are in a comfortable and confidential space.
The exam is outpatient, and generally does not require any sedative or anesthesia. Patients are able to return to normal activities immediately after the exam. Many patients report passing a lot of gas after the exam, which is completely normal. Walking around helps ease this issue.
