What Is Defecography?

Defecography is a specialized imaging test that evaluates how the rectum and pelvic floor function during bowel movements. It helps doctors understand the cause of certain bowel and pelvic floor problems by showing how muscles, organs, and structures move and work together during defecation.

This test is most often used when symptoms cannot be fully explained by routine exams or other imaging studies.

Why Is Defecography Performed?

Defecography may be recommended to help evaluate symptoms such as:

• Chronic constipation
• Difficulty emptying the bowels
• Sensation of incomplete evacuation
• Pelvic pressure or bulging
• Fecal incontinence
• Suspected pelvic floor dysfunction
• Rectal prolapse, rectocele, or enterocele

Here at CSA, our talented NP’s perform the traditional x-ray defecography, which uses real-time X-ray imaging while you simulate a bowel movement. We ensure that our patients are taken care of with comfort and dignity to obtain real-time imaging to support diagnosis and treatment.

What Happens During the Test?

While the exact steps may vary, defecography generally involves:

1. A contrast material is placed into the rectum to simulate stool.
2. You will be positioned on a specialized chair or table.
3. Images are taken while you squeeze, relax, and empty your bowels. The test typically takes 30 to 60 minutes.

Is the Test Painful?

Defecography is not usually painful, but some people may feel mild discomfort, pressure, or embarrassment. Our medical staff are trained to maintain privacy and professionalism throughout the procedure.

How Should I Prepare?

Preparation instructions vary depending on the type of defecography being performed. You may be asked to:

• Use a mild enema beforehand
• Avoid eating or drinking for a short period before the test
• Wear comfortable clothing

Your care team will provide specific instructions in advance.

What Do the Results Show?

Defecography can reveal:

• Abnormal muscle coordination
• Structural issues such as rectocele or prolapse
• Incomplete rectal emptying
• Pelvic floor weakness or dysfunction

The results help guide treatment, which may include pelvic floor therapy, medical management, or surgical consultation, depending on the findings.

After the Test
